In Makhachkala, a powerful explosion occurred at a gas station, resulting in a tragic loss of life.

The death toll has risen to 35 people, including at least three children. Preliminary information suggests that the explosion originated in a car service building situated across from the gas station. The exact cause of the explosion is currently under investigation.

According to the latest update from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, 35 individuals have lost their lives due to this devastating incident. Reports indicate that between 80 and 105 people have been affected by the explosion and ensuing fire. Rescue operations are ongoing at the site. In response to this tragedy, August 15 has been declared a day of mourning in the republic.

The explosion took place on Monday evening, around 21:50 Moscow time, at the intersection of Kulinskaya Street and Federal Highway in the village of Novokuli, near Makhachkala. Authorities believe that the initial blast occurred within a car service facility situated across from the Nafta24 gas station, which subsequently led to the fire spreading to the gas station itself.

Sergei Melikov, the head of the Republic of Dagestan, stated, "The explosion triggered a fire that reached the gas station after containers detonated in front of it." Shockingly, the force of the blast resulted in burning fuel engulfing individuals who had gathered to observe the fire at the car service, causing injuries to those within a 50-meter radius.

Emergency services reported that two out of eight fuel tanks at the gas station exploded, contributing to a fire that affected an area of 600 square meters. Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze after approximately three hours.

The exact trigger for this catastrophic explosion remains to be determined. Law enforcement agencies are conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the cause and ensure accountability, prioritizing the safety of the local population.

In response to the incident, the Investigative Committee has initiated a criminal case, and the regional prosecutor's office is examining adherence to fire and industrial safety regulations. The Ministry of Emergency Situations has reported that 105 individuals sustained injuries, while the Ministry of Health indicates 80 casualties, of whom 63 are hospitalized, including 11 in critical condition.

Tragically, among the deceased are three children, as confirmed by Dagestan's head, Sergei Melikov. The Ministry of Health of the Republic has noted that the identification of all victims is still underway.

Rescue teams and firefighters continue to clear debris from the site of the explosion, striving to ensure safety and recover any possible survivors.

In response to the gravity of the situation, a state of emergency has been declared in the Kumtorkalinsky district of Dagestan.
